Key Items are items that play a specific role in the story.  In the Items menu, these items are highlighted green.

Voice Recorder[]

The Voice Recorder (ボイスレコーダー, Boisu Rekōdā) is an item assembled by collecting its five pieces.  All five pieces are automatically acquired at various points in the game.

  • Odd Glass Tube (奇妙なガラス管, Kimyōna Garasu-Kan) is automatically acquired from a treasure chest after defeating the ghost in the church basement in Chapter 1.
  • Spiral Wire (うずまきハリガネ, Uzumaki Harigane) is acquired from defeating Bubble Evil King.
  • Bell Tube (ラッパ状の金属管, Rappa-Jō no Kinzoku-Kan, literally "Trumpet Shaped Metal Tube") is acquired from defeating Chairman Evil King.
  • Manual Handle (手回しハンドル, Temawashi Handoru, literally "Handwheel") is acquired from defeating Big Bull Evil King.
  • Long Screw (やたら長いネジ, Yatara Nagai Neji, literally "Ridiculously Long Screw") is acquired from defeating Teen Idol Evil King.  After this item is acquired, all six parts will automatically leave your inventory and be replaced by the Voice Recorder.

Business Cards[]

Business cards are collected during the first four chapters of the game, and they are necessary in order to progress up the stairs at Mr. Big Inc.  There are 4 cards:

  • The Ordinary Card (しがない名刺, Shiganai Meshi, literally "Business Card") is automatically given to the player by Ari's father at the end of Chapter 1.
  • The Gaudy Card (あでやかな名刺, Adeyakana Meishi, literally "Glamorous Business Card") can be acquired from the Hung Over Gal on Madril's second floor starting in Chapter 3.  The Swanky Mirror is required in order to acquire the card.
  • The Official Card (かたくるしい名刺, Katakurushī Meishi, literally "Formal Business Card") can be acquired from the Gloomy Researcher on Madril's second floor starting in Chapter 3.  Kisling must have joined the party already in order to acquire the card.
  • The Eh, it's ok Card (それなりの名刺, Sorenari no Meishi, literally "Reasonable Business Card") can be acquired from the Town Hall Manager on Madril's first floor starting in Chapter 4. The events surrounding Mr. Big Inc. must have begun in order to acquire the card.

Item Exchange[]

All of the items involved in the item exchange sidequest are key items until the final item, the Unicorn's Horn, is acquired.  The items are acquired in the following order:

  • Mere Pebble (ただの小石, Tada no Koishi) is automatically acquired from Ari's grandmother at the end of Chapter 1.
  • Bread Crust (パンのみみ, Pan no Mimi) is acquired from the Bakery Woman in Tenel.
  • Worn Brush (使い古しの筆, Tsukaifurushi no Fude) is acquired from the Wandering Painter in Tenel Forest.
  • Rare Gear (レアな歯車, Rea na Haguruma) is acquired from the Gear Freak in Madril.
  • Penlight (ペンライト, Penraito) is acquired from the Lighthouse Keeper in Rashelo.
  • BrokenGun (こわれた銃, Kowa Reta Jū) is acquired from the character named "In Trouble In Trouble In Trouble" in Highland.

Keys[]

In the World Library, keys are required in order to progress through the entirety of the dungeon.  There are four keys total, and they are scattered throughout the dungeon in treasure chests.

  • Garnet Key (ガーネットのカギ, Gānetto no Kagi)
  • Emerald Key (エメラルドのカギ, Emerarudo no Kagi)
  • Sapphire Key (サファイアのカギ, Safaia no Kagi)
  • Amethyst Key (アメジストのカギ, Amejisuto no Kagi)

Cyphertexts[]

The cyphertexts (暗号文, Angō Bun, literally "ciphertext") are given to you by members of the World Crypto Organization as part of the Cyphertext sidequest.  There are six in total, and they must be acquired in order.

Miss Madril Items[]

As part of the Miss Madril sidequest, there are several items that are scattered in treasure chests in the Rumille Plain (and one item acquired in Rashelo) that can be given to the Young Man in Love With Miss Madril located in Rashelo.  There are seven items total: four which can be given to the man and three which are intended to be incorrect counterparts of the correct items.

The correct items are the following:

  • Punk Wig (パンクなかつら, Panku na Katsura)
  • Chic Suspenders (小粋なサスペンダ, Koikina Sasupenda)
  • Cholesterol (コレステロール, Koresuterōru)
  • Shiny Lens (輝きコンタクト, Kagayaki Kontakuto, literally "Shiny Contacts") (this item is acquired from the Rich Kid in Rashelo)

The incorrect items are the following:

  • Lustrous Hair (さらさらヘアー, Sarasara Heā)
  • Cool Vest (グーなチョッキ, Gūna Chokki)
  • Gorgeous Mascara (美しきマスカラ, Utsukushiki Masukara)

Other Items[]

  • Loaf for Pickup (おつかいのパン, Otsu Kai no Pan) is a story-required item acquired at the beginning of Chapter 1.  The loaf is acquired from the Bakery Woman after Ari's mother asks Ari to pick up bread from Tenel.
  • Ground Beef (ブタのコマギレ, Buta no Komagire, literally "Pork Fillet") is an optional item that can be purchased from the butcher in Tenel for 20 sukel on the first day of the game.  If purchased, it can be sold back to the butcher for 30 sukel the next day.
  • Tiny Gears (ちっちゃな歯車, Chitchana Haguruma) are invisible items scattered across each of the world maps that are collected by walking over them.  There are 32 total, 8 in each of Tenel ForestRumille PlainPospos Snowfield, and Addashi Desert.  The gears are acquired for the Sword of Gear sidequest.
  • Fruit Knife (果物ナイフ, Kudamono Naifu) is acquired from the blacksmith in Tenel.  It can be sold to the Assistant Boy in Madril for 300 sukel, or 400 sukel if the boy's first offer is rejected.
  • Map o' Evil Kings (魔王マップ, Maō Mappu) is automatically acquired from the Ringmaster in Tenel during Chapter 1.
  • Old Music Box (古いオルゴール, Furui Orugōru) is automatically acquired from Ari's mother at the end of Chapter 1.  The item is later automatically given to Marlene at the end of Chapter 3.
  • Swanky Mirror (おしゃれ手鏡, Oshare Tekagami, literally "Fashionable Hand Mirror") is acquired from the Man Counting Desperately in Madril.  It can be acquired in either Chapter 3 or Chapter 4, but it required in order to obtain the Gaudy Card.
  • Letter Bottle (手紙のビン, Tegami no Bin) is an item acquired at the Lighthouse in Rashelo.  It is used for the Message in a Bottle sidequest.
  • Miniature Statue (ミニチュアの像, Minichua no Zō) is automatically acquired after defeating Chairman Evil King.  Its purpose is to unlock the Transverse Tunnel.
  • Gold Gear (金の歯車, Kin no Haguruma) and Silver Gear (銀の歯車, Gin no Haguruma) are obtained in two the fourth floors in the Madril Sewer.  They enable the 3x3 path grid on the second floor to fully move any tile.
  • Friendship Bond (友情の証し, Yūjō no Akashi, literally "Proof of Friendship") is automatically acquired in Chapter 5.  The item allows Ari to use his "Friendly" specials.  The Friendship Bond will power up three times (counting its acquisition as the first), with a new "Friendly" special learned after each power-up.
  • Old Stone Doll (ふるびた石人形, Furubita Ishiningyō) is acquired in a treasure chest on the ninth floor of the Deep Grave Pit.  It is required to obtain the Gear Tower Key.
  • Gear Tower Key (歯車タワーのカギ, Haguruma Tawā no Kagi) is acquired in a secret room on the sixth floor of the Deep Grave Pit.  The key is required to enter the Gear Tower to fight Phantom Evil King.

Unused Items[]

There are six key items that can not be acquired normally during the game, can only be acquired through hacking, and serve no purpose.

  • Recorder 2
  • Dial w/One Hand
  • Pedestalof Stone
